Best Dog Dental Chews for Small and Large Dogs

By TailTested Editorial Team · Updated · 6 min read

Greenies Large dental dog treats, our dental chew pick for dogs of 50 to 100 pounds, in a 24-count pouch

Of our three dental chews, only Virbac's plant-based Veggiedent says on its listing that it is accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). A listing that does not mention the council does not tell you either way, and below we explain what acceptance means and where to check the council's own list. Greenies Large, rated 4.8 stars from 24,460 ratings, is our pick for dogs of 50 to 100 pounds. ORAVET's small chew is built around an ingredient called delmopinol.

Nearly everything these listings say about teeth, tartar and breath is the brand's own claim, and we attribute each one. The chews are sold by weight: the Veggiedent is for dogs over 66 pounds and the ORAVET small chew for 10 to 24 pounds by its title.

Our picks

  1. Best for Dogs 50 to 100 Pounds: Greenies Large Natural Dental Dog Treats, Original, 24 Count · Amazon
  2. Best Plant-Based Chew: Virbac C.E.T. Veggiedent Fr3sh Tartar Control Chews, Large · Amazon
  3. Best for Small Dogs: ORAVET Dental Hygiene Chews for Small Dogs, 10-24 lbs, 30 Count · Amazon

How we picked

We searched Amazon for dog dental chews on October 25, 2026, set aside sponsored results and kept listings rated at least 4.5 stars on 1,000 or more ratings. We opened six and read the weight band, ingredients, feeding directions and every dental claim. We picked on rating and weight band and did not require a VOHC mention. Greenies and Pedigree Dentastix are both made by Mars Petcare and share the same star rating, so we picked one. Purina Dentalife and Milk-Bone Brushing Chews are large-dog chews whose listings both say they are VOHC accepted, and both rate 4.7, from 13,508 and 9,182 ratings; the 50-to-100-pound slot went to Greenies, at 4.8 from 24,460. Amazon can pool one rating across a chew's sizes and pack counts, none of these listings says whether its figure covers only the size we name, and the Greenies and Dentalife figures may each cover more than one size. If VOHC acceptance matters most to you, check the council's own accepted-products list at vohc.org/accepted-products. We opened one small-dog chew and no medium-size chews.

1 Best for Dogs 50 to 100 Pounds: Greenies Large Natural Dental Dog Treats, Original, 24 Count

Greenies Large dental dog treats, 24 count

4.8 out of 5 stars from 24,460 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • For dogs of 50 to 100 pounds; the spec table lists adult dogs
  • Wheat flour, gelatin, glycerin and natural poultry flavor among the listed ingredients
  • Flavor listed as Original in the title and spec table, and as chicken in the page title
  • Rawhide-free; 24 chews in a pouch

Greenies has the highest rating of our three picks and the most specific claim: 47 percent less tartar and 40 percent less plaque buildup in 28 days, which the listing credits to data on file without naming a study. It also calls the chews clinically proven, again without a source on the page. Its listing does not mention the VOHC. Two chews whose listings say they are VOHC accepted were set aside; see How we picked.

2 Best Plant-Based Chew: Virbac C.E.T. Veggiedent Fr3sh Tartar Control Chews, Large

Virbac C.E.T. Veggiedent Fr3sh plant-based dental chews for large dogs

4.6 out of 5 stars from 12,725 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • For dogs over 66 pounds; 30 chews per bag
  • Plant-based and gluten-free, per the listing; the allergen line lists soy
  • A Z shape that Virbac says reaches from front to back
  • One chew a day

The Veggiedent is the plant-based option and the only one of our three whose listing says it is VOHC accepted: the description says "they're VOHC accepted!" and the page title says "VOHC approved for plaque & tartar". Virbac also says the chew freshens breath from day one and supports digestion with a prebiotic; those are the brand's claims. The description says 90 percent "noticed significant improvement in their pet's breath from day 1", and gives no source or sample for the figure. It is sized for dogs over 66 pounds, which overlaps the top of the Greenies Large band.

3 Best for Small Dogs: ORAVET Dental Hygiene Chews for Small Dogs, 10-24 lbs, 30 Count

ORAVET dental hygiene chews for small dogs, blue 30-count pouch

4.5 out of 5 stars from 14,524 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • For small dogs of 10 to 24 pounds, per the title
  • Contains delmopinol, which the listing says forms a barrier against the bacteria behind bad breath
  • One chew a day; 30 individually wrapped chews
  • Vanilla aroma and poultry flavor, per the bullets; the spec table lists chicken

ORAVET was the only small-dog chew we opened, so this slot had no rival on our shortlist. It takes a different approach: delmopinol, an ingredient the listing says is also used in human oral rinses. Boehringer Ingelheim says the chew is clinically shown to reduce plaque and tartar, citing its own data on file. Its listing does not mention the VOHC. One sizing note: the title gives 10 to 24 pounds, while a bullet says the chews suit dogs of 3.5 pounds or more.

What to look for

Buy by weight band

Each chew is sold for a weight range: Greenies Large for 50 to 100 pounds, Veggiedent for over 66, ORAVET's small chew for 10 to 24 by its title (a bullet says 3.5 pounds or more). By the bands these listings lead with, a dog of 25 to 49 pounds falls outside all three sizes on this page.

What a VOHC seal means

The Veterinary Oral Health Council says it does not test products itself: it reviews data a company submits and grants its seal to products that meet its standards, for plaque, for calculus or for both. The council publishes its own list of accepted products at vohc.org/accepted-products; check it for current acceptance rather than relying on whether a listing mentions the VOHC.

Daily use and calories

ORAVET and Veggiedent say to give one chew a day, and Greenies calls its chew part of a daily dental care routine. Only Veggiedent gives a calorie figure, 105 kcal per chew.

Returns

Amazon lists all three as non-returnable, so check the weight band before you order.

The bottom line

  • Best for dogs 50 to 100 pounds: Greenies Large has the top rating of the three; its tartar and plaque figures are the brand's own.
  • Best plant-based chew: Veggiedent is plant-based, for dogs over 66 pounds, and its listing says it is VOHC accepted.
  • Best for small dogs: ORAVET's small chew is for dogs of 10 to 24 pounds and is built around delmopinol.

FAQ

Do dental chews replace brushing?

No. The VOHC calls brushing the gold standard, and Colorado State University's veterinary hospital says VOHC-accepted chews are beneficial in addition to daily toothbrushing. Our guide to brushing your dog's teeth covers how to start.

Do dental chews actually work?

Each brand says its chew does, on its own evidence. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that many pet products are marketed with claims that they improve dental health, but not all of them are effective, and suggests asking your veterinarian about dental products.

Should I watch my dog while it chews?

Yes. IDEXX says dogs should always be watched while chewing to reduce the risk of choking, swallowing the chew whole, or fracturing teeth.

Can puppies have these chews?

ORAVET's bullets say its chews are for dogs and puppies six months or older, though its spec table lists all life stages. Greenies' spec table lists adult dogs. Veggiedent's spec table lists all life stages, though this bag is sized for dogs over 66 pounds.

Do vets recommend these chews?

Greenies' listing calls its chews veterinarian-recommended, ORAVET's says its chew is the one veterinarians give to their own dogs, and Veggiedent's page title says vet recommended. Greenies and Virbac give no source for the claim; ORAVET cites its own data on file.

Editor's note: Ratings, specs and sellers are from each Amazon listing as captured on October 25, 2026. Listings change, and when this page and a listing disagree, the listing is right.
