Best Dog Shampoos: Oatmeal, 4-in-1 and Deodorizing

By TailTested Editorial Team · Updated · 5 min read

Wahl Dry Skin & Itch Relief oatmeal dog shampoo, our oatmeal shampoo pick, in a 24-ounce bottle

Dry skin, a coat that tangles and a dog that smells are different jobs, and each of our picks is sold mainly for one of them. Wahl's oatmeal shampoo is sold for dry skin and itch relief and is rated 4.6 stars from 44,207 ratings. Wahl's lavender 4-in-1 is sold to condition and detangle as well as clean. Arm & Hammer's kiwi blossom formula leads with odor.

Itch relief, calming and deodorizing are the brands' words, and we attribute them.

How we picked

We searched Amazon for dog shampoo on October 25, 2026, set aside sponsored results and kept listings rated at least 4.5 stars on 1,000 or more ratings. We left out medicated and antiseptic shampoos on purpose, because their claims are medical, then opened five listings and read the stated purpose, ingredients, directions and every claim. We set aside a Mrs. Meyer's 3-in-1, whose jobs overlap the Wahl 4-in-1 and Arm & Hammer on a thinner rating base, and a PAWFUME deshedding shampoo whose listing makes medical-sounding claims about hot spots and redness.

For the bath itself, see our guide to bathing a dog. For loose coat between baths, see our dog brushes for shedding.

1 Best Oatmeal Shampoo: Wahl Dry Skin & Itch Relief Oatmeal Dog Shampoo, 24 oz

Wahl Dry Skin & Itch Relief oatmeal pet shampoo, 24-ounce bottle

4.6 out of 5 stars from 44,207 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • Oatmeal formula with a coconut lime verbena scent, per the title
  • pH balanced; free of alcohol, parabens and PEG-80, Wahl says
  • Concentrated, which Wahl says means you use less
  • Aloe and lemon verbena among the listed special ingredients

Wahl sells this one for dry skin: the listing says the oatmeal formula moisturizes and provides itch relief, and its spec table names irritated skin as the use. Read those as Wahl's claims; the listing does not say the shampoo treats any skin condition. Its listing has the most ratings of the three, though it offers more than one size and type, and Amazon does not say whether the figure covers only this 24-ounce shampoo. The scent is listed two ways, coconut lime verbena in the title and oatmeal in the spec table.

2 Best Shampoo and Conditioner: Wahl 4-in-1 Calming Dog Shampoo, Lavender Chamomile, 24 oz

Wahl 4-in-1 Calming lavender chamomile dog shampoo, 24-ounce bottle

4.7 out of 5 stars from 35,195 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • Cleans, conditions, detangles and moisturizes, per the title
  • Lavender chamomile scent; Wahl calls it a calming formula
  • For short to long coats, Wahl says
  • 24 fluid ounces, concentrated, Wahl says

This is the Wahl for a coat that tangles. Where the oatmeal formula is sold for dry skin, this one is sold to clean, condition, detangle and moisturize, and its spec table names detangling as the use. Wahl makes the same pH-balanced, alcohol-, paraben- and PEG-80-free claims for both formulas. It has the top star rating of the three.

3 Best Deodorizing Shampoo: Arm & Hammer Deodorizing Dog Shampoo, Kiwi Blossom, 20 fl oz

Arm & Hammer Deodorizing Dog Shampoo, Kiwi Blossom, 20-ounce bottle

4.6 out of 5 stars from 23,023 ratings on Amazon (as captured Oct 25, 2026)

  • Baking soda, which the listing says removes odors from coat and skin
  • pH balanced and free of sulfates, parabens and dyes, per the listing
  • Coconut-based cleansers, with kiwi, lavender, rosemary and yogurt extracts among the key ingredients
  • 20 fluid ounces

Arm & Hammer is the pick for a dog that smells: odor is the job its title and bullets lead with, alongside regular cleansing and grooming. It uses baking soda against odor, finished with a kiwi blossom scent. The description also calls it tearless and gentle on sensitive skin; those are the brand's words, and the bullets do not repeat them. The AKC's puppy guide, cited in our bathing guide, warns that even tearless shampoos can irritate a dog's eyes.

What to look for

The job on the label

Pick by what the listing says the shampoo is for. None of our three is sold as medicated.

Check for sensitivity first

Wahl's oatmeal listing says some pets are sensitive to the plant oils it uses, and recommends talking to your vet and doing a small spot test at least 24 hours before using any new product.

Rinse and dry

Both Wahl listings say to rinse until no shampoo is left behind and to comb out and dry the coat, warning that leaving a dog damp for hours can be a risk for dogs with sensitive skin.

Puppies

Arm & Hammer says its shampoo is for dogs 8 weeks and older. Neither Wahl listing gives an age.

The bottom line

  • Best oatmeal shampoo: Wahl Oatmeal is sold for dry skin and itch relief, and its listing has the most ratings here.
  • Best shampoo and conditioner: Wahl 4-in-1 cleans, conditions and detangles, per its listing, and has the top star rating.
  • Best deodorizing shampoo: Arm & Hammer uses baking soda against odor and is labeled for dogs 8 weeks and up.

FAQ

Is any of these shampoos hypoallergenic?

None of the three listings uses the word. Wahl calls both of its formulas allergy friendly, citing the family dog its logo is modeled on, which it says has severe allergies; Arm & Hammer's description says its formula suits dogs with sensitive skin. Those are the brands' statements, not medical findings.

What should I use for itchy or inflamed skin?

See your veterinarian first. The ASPCA says to contact your vet right away if you suspect a problem with your pet's skin, and VCA says that if the skin is dry or irritated and you bathe often, bathe less often and follow up with your vet if the problem continues. A shampoo sold for itch relief is not a diagnosis or a treatment, and we left medicated shampoos out of this guide.

Why are there two Wahl shampoos?

Their listings sell them for different jobs: the oatmeal formula for dry skin and itch relief, the lavender 4-in-1 for conditioning and detangling. They share Wahl's pH-balanced, concentrated base claims, so if your dog needs neither job, Arm & Hammer is the other option.

Does a calming shampoo calm my dog?

Wahl calls its lavender chamomile formula calming but does not say what it calms or cite any evidence, and its spec table describes the benefit as smoothing.

How often should I bathe my dog?

Sources differ. The ASPCA says at least once every three months, the AKC's current puppy guide says monthly, and an older AKC article says a dog can usually be bathed weekly with a gentle shampoo, while VCA says bathing once a week can dry out skin and coat. Our guide to bathing a dog sets these side by side.
